PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
Please follow these instructions before your abortion at our clinic:
- In the 24 hours before your appointment, do not take aspirin or any other drug containing ASA. Tylenol, Advil and Ibuprofen are okay.
- Do not use any alcohol or street drugs for 24 hours before your appointment. If you have used any drugs within that period, it is very important that you tell us for your physical safety.
- Please allow for 2 - 3 hours at the clinic on the day of your procedure. The abortion procedure itself only takes 10-15 minutes, but you will need time for counselling and recovery care.
- Due to the medications that we give, you should NOT drive a vehicle for 24 hours after your abortion. If you drive yourself to the clinic, we will not be able to perform your abortion and you will have to reschedule your appointment.
- Please arrange for transportation to and from the clinic on the day of your abortion. We strongly advise you to have someone accompany you home. You may bring one person with you into the clinic - please tell them that they will need to show photo ID at the clinic. This person can stay in the waiting room or can drop you off and come back to pick you up.
- Please take a bath or shower before coming to your appointment
- Please eat a light meal before your appointment if you can. You will be getting a local anesthetic only, so you can eat if you like.
- Wear or bring a short-sleeved shirt (T-shirt) and warm socks or slippers.
- Please bring an extra pair of underwear and two sanitary (maxi-pads) with you. You will probably need a supply of pads at home after your abortion.
- We ask you and any accompanying person not to wear perfume or cologne for the comfort of other patients and staff.
- Bring your BC Care Card and one piece of photo ID with you. Please remember that you and anyone who comes with you MUST show photo ID. If you do not have any photo ID, please tell our booking staff at the time of booking your appointment.
- We strongly request that you arrive ON TIME. Delays can disrupt our schedule and the comfort of other patients.
- If you think that you have miscarried, see your doctor and call us to make sure that you don't need a follow up examination.
- Call us one (1) week before your abortion to confirm your appointment. We will remind you of what you need to bring. Also, if you don't phone to confirm your appointment, we will assume that you aren't coming and will give your time to someone else.
- If you are getting laminaria before your abortion, please follow these same instructions before that appointment, too.
- If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call us right away.
